In Fire and Masks, Angela Boehm and J. Ashley Nixon exhibit landscape and portrait images from Canada and Peru exploring cultural heritage, forest fire and regeneration, resilience and responses to environmental and social changes.
The Giving Trees, Angela Boehm
After the fire, the canopy clears, and seedlings appear. The sun feeds sprouts from surviving roots, and seeds take hold in the ash. Even while it was burning, the forest wasn’t dead. There is a message of hope in our forests; there is much evidence of nature’s resilience.
The images in The Giving Trees share both the beauty of the ephemeral repose of a burned forest and the strength of its regeneration.
Behind the Mask, J. Ashley Nixon
When Ashley set out to film and photograph the dance performance and culture of the Huaconada in Mito, a small town located high up in the Peruvian Andes, he could never have imagined how the imagery of masks would change, just over a year later.
Behind the Mask explores the people of Mito and the Huaconada, an ancient ritual dance recognized by UNESCO for its intangible cultural heritage. This living tradition is a fabulous component of Peru's rich and diverse cultural identity, a positive force for the social and economic development of their community, and an evolving symbol against the institutionalized corruption that has grown to be a moral crisis in Peru.
All our lives have changed. How we work, learn, play. How we socialize. Survive. Social Camouflage is a series of portraits of one person, the photographer’s daughter; a personal exploration of those changes close to him and in society.
Angela Boehm Bio
Angela Boehm is a documentary photographer who focuses on long term projects. She is known for her exploration of generations; teenagers, midlife and seniors. In building these projects her emphasis is on creating empathy for those she collaborates with and their stage of life, quietly exposing what it's like to be in their world. During the time of COVID-19, Angela has turned her focus to the forest and has been documenting the recovery of forests following fires.
Angela grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan and holds a degree in Business. After retiring from a successful career in business and philanthropy, she turned to photography. Angela is largely self-taught and has supplemented her learning through the International Center for Photography in New York. During February Angela’s work is also featured in Exposure Festivals Emerging Photographers Showcase at Contemporary Calgary and at The Alberta Society of Artists, Through the Artist Lens exhibit located at the ASA main gallery.
J. Ashley Nixon Bio
J. Ashley Nixon is a photographer, documentary filmmaker and writer exploring interconnected sustainability narratives about social development, culture and environmental management, and artistic and sports performance.
Ashley teaches writing about images and sustainability at Mount Royal University, has a Ph.D. in ecology and is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
His published work includes books on communities in Peru, the Sled Island Music & Arts Festival, and portraits of cosplayers. His latest book, Behind the Mask, is about the Huaconada, an ancient, ritual dance performed in the Andes of Peru, recognized by UNESCO for its intangible cultural heritage. This work complements his documentary film, The Mask and More, which was featured on national television in Peru.
Access: Location is wheelchair accessible with access to the building by the NE double glass doors from the parking lot. Travel up to the 2nd floor by elevator.
