Scott Campbell presents the images he created during his daily run around a small lake in Oslo, Norway, over a span of 7 years. Taken with a “runner’s” camera, the images seek to dispel the myth that small digital cameras cannot capture the essence of a place.
“I have been running since I was a young teen. The things I have seen while out for a run are so marvellous, that for over 40 years I have dragged myself out in all sorts of weather on the off chance that today would be one of those days where I would again see something that would catch my breath. A few years ago, I began running to a little lake in Norway called Sognsvann, which lies in the greenbelt capping Oslo from the northwest to the northeast. At first, I ran there because it was very convenient, but I quickly discovered that Sognsvann has a beauty all of its own. No matter the weather, no matter the time of day, no matter the season, there is always something to see at Sognsvann that will make you catch your breath. Like running, I have been taking photographs ever since I was a teen. Photography allows me to share with others the wonderful things I see around me. I started carrying a cell phone for safety in the 1990's, and when camera phones came along, it suddenly occurred to me that I could (and should) be taking photographs of the things I see while out for a run. The images for the exhibit have three things in common: they are all about Sognsvann; they are all serendipitous images made during a daily run; and they were all made with a small “runner’s” camera. With these images, I hope to highlight the beauty of Sognsvann, as well as to make the point that great images can be made with small cameras.” - Scott Campbell
