FAT PEOPLE IN PHOTOS, BIANCA MIRANDA & KESHIA CHEESMAN
The GRAND
February 1 - March 31
Fat people in photos is a photo project by Bianca Miranda and Keshia Cheesman (creators and performers of The F Word show), produced by Handsome Alice, in partnership with The GRAND.
Born out of the desire and the need to see fat people represented in all kinds of media, they ask the questions: “What happens when fat people are given the space to be remarkable, to be celebrated, to take up space? What happens when you take the time to see the humanity behind our bodies that have been historically deemed unworthy by society?”
Alongside photographer Tinna Khamphasouk of LAO’D Productions, who is all about “highlighting the beauty and diversity of 2SLGBTQ+ and underrepresented communities”, we invited nine fat people into a judgement-free and inclusive space where risk and play were honoured and encouraged. We got to know each other. We hyped each other up. And we couldn’t stop saying – no, more like squealing, “We can’t believe we’re in a room full of fat people!” The truth is we all have different relationships to fatness. Some are reclaiming the word “fat”, some are just on their way there. But what we can agree on is that all we’ve ever wanted was to see fat people living their lives – no hiding, no touch-ups, just fat people existing as they are.
Fat people laugh.
Fat people cry.
Fat people dance.
Fat people are fierce.
Fat people are beautiful.
Fat people are magic.
