Where once stood a sentinel remains the foundation of a story long since told. A story with deep roots—of a character weathered and worn, broken down, but never uprooted. A story of resilience and strength. A stoic and stolid reminder that in the end to stay—to stand—is all a stump can do.
Derek Bisbing sees the forest for the stumps. In his wanderings, the Canmore-based photographer, wanderer, mountain biker, has taken the time to record and contemplate the legacy of these once-mighty remnants. From the rainforests of British Columbia to the Alberta Rockies, Bisbing seeks to reanimate the fallen for the Exposure Photography Festival. His personal twist on portrait photography illuminates the soul behind the wrinkled and ruined faces of these once-proud giants, raising stumps from obscurity.
