JIMMY THE BEAR: PHOTO 147
Sparrow Community Artspace
February 2 - February 25
From Lesia Bear’s upcoming documentary about the exceptional career of her father, Jim Bear, Jimmy the Bear: Photo 147 is a photographic glimpse into the world of snooker and a Cree Nation man who rocked it for decades. Photo 147 explores Jimmy’s experience as an Indigenous man navigating a game traditionally reserved for Caucasian men. Through his impressive playing and larger than life personality, Jimmy charmed people on and off the table. Now in his 80s, Jimmy is finally being recognized for his contributions to snooker. And while he was one of the best on the table, the path he carved for other marginalized people is an achievement that speaks to his fierce soul and humble heart. Artists Lesia Bear, Barry Morrissette, and Jenny Tzanakos present photography of renowned snooker players, including Jimmy the Bear and his contemporaries, billiard culture, found images reconsidered in current contexts, and a sneak peak at the upcoming documentary. Kaya wehkac ka pakinson – Don’t ever let go of yourself.
