RYAN LEE - EXPOSURE EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS SHOWCASE
In My Room is an unconventional photographic series because it does not tell; it does not prescribe meaning to any of its contents. Rather, it's meant to give the viewer enough information and context to reach their own conclusions of the subjects within the photographs.
There’s a lot to be said by photographing people in their living spaces. It speaks a lot to their living habits: Are they neat and tidy? Are they messy? Are they lazy? Does the state of their room allude to their mental health? How much free time do they have? What kinds of hobbies do they partake in? How much light do they live in? How much money do they seem to make?
Further, the current pandemic has forced so many people's worlds to shrink to the size of their personal working and living spaces. For some people, these spaces have become containers for their whole being; examining their spaces is especially potent during this time. How have they decorated their spaces to feel like home? Do they struggle to be confined to one space for such long periods of time?
These are questions that can be pondered about and perhaps answered through gazing at and studying someone’s living space. By showing the people who inhabit these spaces themselves within the context of their environments, this visual study is visually contextualizes them- who they are, where they live, how they live; however, it's up to the viewers to reach these conclusions.
