Sonia’s Trees (2018-2021), is Letizia Lopreiato’s three year visual poetry social documentary and artivism awareness campaign, centred on eco-sustainability. It is a tale which leverages 35mm photography, poetry, spoken word and Super 8 documentary storytelling, to bring the focus on the topic of Ireland’s reforestation thanks to its native seeds and trees. Sonia’s Trees main purpose is the one of empathetically connect urban communities everywhere, with its message and vision for eco-sustainability. Sonia’s Trees visual poetry solo exhibition and art-based awareness campaign, is conceived with community engagement as its core philosophy; the project’s framework from idea conception, to its execution and exhibition, fully embodies values such as mobility, access, inclusion and social engagement, in order for the exhibition to be transported freely by the artist, from location to location, and for its message to be shares as widely as possible. To this purpose, for the series of shows which Letizia hosted in different parts of Ireland from July until September 2021, the over 50 photographs which constitute this project’s body of work, have been printed on waterproof recycled material (in the form of a mosaic of 30 posters including the artist’s over-layed work of poetry, being poster one of the historical format chosen for awareness campaigns’ communication). This process had the main purpose to make the content as accessible as possible, and for the show to be installed an uninstalled by the artist herself, in the most agile, effective and efficient way, as well as for all the exhibition’s material, to be transported by her via means of transport, from location to location. Letizia wanted to create a true eco-friendly mobile exhibition to reach out to and connect with the widest possible audience for this project, by translating the socially engaged element of its creative process, into its final output, also and above all during its showcase phase. 

About Sonia’s Trees photo-seeds art-packs give away community engagement initiative: 

Letizia’s intention as an artist through the photo-seeds art packs give away action, which she has carried out in different parts of Dublin from July until December 2021, and which will be showcased during this online exhibition, it aims to expands on the exploration of the connection, between individual and collective consciousness. This artivism awareness campaign wants to spark people’s curiosity and become a point for reflection, on what it means to consider the relationship between humans and the environment, both at a psychological and at a physical level, from a place identity and psychogeography perspective.

In Letizia’s words:  “I have been gifting free photo-seeds art packs handcrafted by me every day, as focal point of this art project initiative, so warmly embraced by the public to soon have evolved into a community engagement action, thanks to the great help of the kind patrons of this initiative. All art and culture festivals, art galleries, and local businesses which offered their kind help to my project, by allowing me to reach out to the wider community, and to spread its message, are listed at the Sonia’s Trees page I have created on my website for the occasion of Exposure Photography Festival 22.”
