Tiffany Thomson
Calgary, Alberta
ARTIST BIO
Tiffany Thomson is a queer woman and photographer focusing on 2SLGBTQIA+ issues. Her experiences being raised in the Mormon church and subsequent exit after coming out as a gay woman, have inspired her to work with her new community. Her photographs are intimate and vulnerable, often in black and white - highlighting the connections of our human experience.
Tiffany's most recent exhibition was at Contemporary Calgary through the Exposure Festival, where she won the GRAIN Project Emerging Photographer Award. This year, Tiffany was also a guest on CBC Radio Daybreak Alberta with Paul Karchut, discussing her Safe Spaces series.
PROJECT STATEMENT
These works are images and words from some of the 2SLGBTQIA+ elders’ community in the Calgary Alberta region. The series documents the living and the non-living. They are memories of those lost, and the living who endure to share their stories. They are histories of struggle, resilience, learning, identity and love. Their histories and strength laid the foundations for us, and their stories must be heard and not forgotten. These are the living. They are here right now, living full lives and continue to need safe spaces to love, to grow, to be who they want to be.
